“…a one man folk punk explosion…one of Canada’s most respected songwriters…former guitar slinger from Stark Naked & The Fleshtones, now plays fast n furious folk punk with a nod to the roots of rock and even film noir…a mashup of Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer and The Ramones with a splash of big audio beats…all wrapped up in an acoustic songwriter punk stance…volleying between punk, folk and rock, Ripper jumps all over each style, stealing from one and reshaping another until he comes up with a unique sound and vibe all his own. “
Eugene Ripper is a trailblazer in Canada’s punk folk scene. From his early days with Canada’s first-wave surf punk rockers Stark Naked and the Fleshtones and throughout his enduring solo career, Ripper has been a master of blending punk, folk, blues, country, beats and rock into a unique musical footprint. Celebrated for this hybrid approach imbued with a DIY punk rock ethos, Ripper’s musical journey has seen him flourish from the Toronto punk scene to the muddy roots of Vancouver and the vibrant anti-folk scene of New York City’s East Village. His latest releases include “Punks and Pushers” and “Go Van Gogh” both framed in a driving punk blues rock infused sound serving up Ripper’s vivid sharp lyrical touch
